A major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck deep in the sea north of Bali and Lombok islands in Indonesia at 0003 UTC on February 18, 2023, according to the Indonesian National Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG).

The epicenter of the quake was located approximately 145 miles north of Mataram, the capital of West Nusa Tenggara province, at a depth of 66 miles. The BMKG reported two strong aftershocks within half an hour of the initial tremor, with magnitudes of 5.8 and 5.6.

The earthquake caused tremors that were felt in Bali, Lombok, and other parts of Indonesia. There have been no immediate reports of any casualties or damage, but the BMKG has issued a tsunami warning for the region.

Residents in the area are being advised to stay away from the coast and seek higher ground as a precaution against a potential tsunami.

The earthquake is a reminder of the seismic activity that is common in the region. Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped area around the Pacific Ocean that is home to a large number of active volcanoes and earthquakes.
