Charlie Hunnam Explains Why He Didn't Return for 'Pacific Rim 2'

The Actor's Absence in the Sequel

Exclusive Interview with Den of Geek

Charlie Hunnam, who played the main character in Guillermo del Toro's 2013 monsters-vs-robots epic "Pacific Rim", did not return for the sequel, "Pacific Rim Uprising". In an exclusive interview with Den of Geek for his new true-life adventure drama "The Lost City of Z", the actor revealed why he made the decision.

Hunnam explained that he was offered the opportunity to reprise his role as Raleigh Becket in "Pacific Rim Uprising". However, he was also offered the lead role in a remake of Steven McQueen's 1973 prison escape drama "Papillon". Hunnam ultimately chose to do "Papillon" because he felt it was a more challenging and interesting project.

"I had to make a decision," Hunnam said. "I could do the big, tentpole movie that was a sure thing, or I could do this little independent film that I thought had the potential to be something really special. And I chose the latter.

"I think 'Papillon' is a better film than 'Pacific Rim Uprising'," Hunnam continued. "I'm proud of the work I did in 'Pacific Rim', but I think 'Papillon' is a more mature and accomplished film."

Despite Hunnam's absence, "Pacific Rim Uprising" was a commercial success, grossing over $380 million worldwide. However, the film received mixed reviews from critics, with many complaining that it was too similar to the first film.
