Vernau was elected by the WDR Broadcasting Council in a runoff election. She received 37 votes, while her opponent, Andreas Bachmann, received 25 votes.

Vernau is a lawyer and has worked at WDR since 2008. She has held various positions at the broadcaster, including head of the legal department and head of human resources.
