Juneteenth Federal Holiday

Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom and Education

Juneteenth's Historical Significance

Juneteenth, officially known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday in the United States.

Celebrated annually on June 19, it commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas received news of the Emancipation Proclamation, which had abolished slavery two and a half years earlier.

In 2021, Juneteenth became the latest federal holiday in the U.S. and the first to be approved since Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Three years after it was made a federal holiday, Juneteenth 2024 marks a day of celebration as well as education about the historical struggle for equality and freedom.

Becoming a Federal Holiday

Juneteenth's official recognition as a federal holiday came with the passage of legislation by Congress on June 16, 2021.

President Biden signed the law into effect, making June 19th a day to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.

The day is known as "Juneteenth" as a combination of the words "June" and "nineteenth."

It is a celebration of the end of slavery and a reminder of the ongoing fight for racial justice.
