The Black Rain Frog: An Unusual and Delightful Burrowing Species
A Unique Appearance
The black or plain rain frog (Breviceps fuscus) is a small, burrowing frog species found only on the forested slopes of the southern Cape fold mountains in South Africa. Its most distinctive feature is its permanently grouchy expression, caused by its fixed jaw and small mouth.
Underground Dwellers
Breviceps fuscus is a burrowing frog and can be found in tunnels up to 150 mm deep or among vegetation up to about 30 cm above the ground. It generally prefers to avoid water and spends most of its time underground.
Nocturnal Habits
This nocturnal amphibian is active at night and spends the day in its burrows. It feeds on insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates.
Conservation Status
The black rain frog is not a typical pet. It is a wild frog isolated to a single region of South Africa. Therefore, it is important to respect its natural habitat and avoid disturbing it.
