Man Sets Himself on Fire Outside Trump's Trial
Victim Identified as Maxwell Azzarello
Authorities: Severe Burns Led to Death
Law enforcement has confirmed the identity of the man who set himself on fire outside of former President Donald Trump's trial on Friday as Maxwell Azzarello. Maxwell, 37, of St. Augustine, Florida, died Friday night from severe burns after lighting himself on fire earlier in the day inside the courthouse.
According to police, Azzarello entered the courthouse around 11:30 a.m. carrying a bag and a lighter. He was seen walking around the lobby for several minutes before going into the courtroom where Trump's trial was being held. A short time later, he poured a flammable liquid on himself and set himself on fire.
Witnesses reported that Azzarello was screaming as he ran around the courtroom, waving his arms. Security guards quickly subdued him and put out the fire, but he had already sustained severe burns. He was rushed to a local hospital where he later died.
The motive for Azzarello's self-immolation is unknown. Investigators are reviewing security footage and interviewing witnesses to try to determine what led him to take his own life.
